Special Needs & Inclusion

Every child, Every chance

Sometimes, the best way to get the most out of the classroom is to leave it and take learning outside. Outdoor learning can make for happier, healthier, well-rounded students – particularly for those with special educational needs (SEN).

We welcome the inclusion of all children whatever their individual needs may be. All children have the right to achieve and develop to their full potential. We believe that having an inclusive policy benefits all children, and is a positive experience that reflects the diversity of our Treehouse Club community.

The forestry education provides a new setting to take on challenges, and learn life skills without even realising it. Our children with SEN benefit from how the outdoors relieves stress and anxiety, develops social skills, motivates learning across the curriculum (and beyond) and allows them to be practical, responsible and productive members of the community.

The Treehouse Club is committed to working with all children to meet individual needs. We will not exclude any child on the grounds of their additional needs, and will strive to meet their needs and remove any barriers that may arise. We work by designating a member of staff, Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) and a deputy SENCO.

The role of the SENCO is as follows:

  •  To support the children with practical measures
  • To monitor and review the practical intervention
  • To support other members of staff
  •  To co-ordinate the planning for individual needs
  •  To liaise between the setting and any other professionals involved
  •  To liaise with, and support parents
  •  To attend training as necessary to keep up to date with policies and current issues, and share this information with all staff.

At all times the staff will liaise and cooperate with any other professionals who may be involved with your child. We feel strongly that a multi-disciplinary approach is necessary to address special educational needs effectively. We work in partnership with parents to best meet the needs of each child in our care and it may be that for some children, an extended ‘Settling In’ period is beneficial.

If you require any additional information on any area of our Special educational Needs Policy please feel free to speak to the SENCO who will be only too glad to answer any questions you may have.
